The artist in his studio.
My father was basically an artist. He painted horses and lithographed hundreds of copies to sell at our store on Grant Avenue. He was proud of his painting of animals, warriors and emperors which he proudly frame and hung to sell at the store. He sold several of my drawings of dragons too. My sister and brother-in-law dumped out all his paintings of those horses though I manage to save a few.
Through my father's encouragement and support, I learned Chinese brush painting from several masters; Wong Lui Sang, James Tan (whom by the way, survived the Golden Dragon massacre in 1977) and Michael Ling. I never really got good at Chinese brush painting, though unconciously it may have an affect on my artwork today.
Want to learn Chinese brush painting? Here's a step by step online lesson with Cheong Thye Ming of Sabah, East Malaysia.
