Inside a dim sum store. This illustration is based on a dim sum store on Jackson Street in SF Chinatown. These stores are a cheaper alternative to going to a tea house restaurant for dim sum. Here the father is taking his two kids on his day off to buy some dim sum to take home or going to visit a relative or friend.
It is a Chinese custom when one goes visit a relative or friend in their homes, to not go empty handed. It's called Sau Sum in Cantonese. This would entail dim sum, oranges or sweets. At the end of the visit, person being visited would return some of the food with a little red envelope. That is like returning some of the favor I guess.
Recently I have noticed more agressive selling at these dim sum stores. After you have ordered they keep on telling you to add more and more. If you are slow in answering, they will begin to stick more items into your box. There have been more of these dim sum shops in the past few years so I guess the pressure from competition is great. Just say "NO!!! Ngo m yiu!".
