Morning Scene in San Francisco Chinatown

This is the cover of the book. It's based on the first illustration and is a neater version, the corner of Stockton and Jackson Street in San Francisco's Chinatown. Here I wanted to illustrate the real community feeling of the Chinese community I grew up in. The mother taking her children to school. The familiar face of Ah Wong Bok, the children saying "Look Mommy...Ah Wong Bok!" and Ah Wong Bok waves back and says "Jouh Sahn! Good Morning!". The store on that corner is called Orange Land. 3288 is not the real address. It has the sounds synonymous with "Sahng Yih Faht Daht", the business will prosper. Which is a very important element in the psychies of most Chinese. The characters on the crates stand for gold. Peaches symbolize abundance and fertility. The man in the background with the red bow tie is my father. The couplet on the doorway reads, "To Develope Big and Prosperous" and "The Flower Opens Bringing Prosperity". Oh...and the characters on the window is my name in Chinese, Huang Yingwei. Do you know the what "gung hei faht choi" means? No...not happy new year. It means "Happy greetings...become prosperous!"
