A Chinese Altar

I had to get it right for this illustration. I had a little help with reference material and advice from Taoist Master and author of numerous books, Deng Meng Dao, whom by the way is the graphic artist for this book. The figures from left to right is Kwan Kung (or Guan Gong) the God of War, Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Compassion, and Buddha. Many temples can be found along the alley of Waverly Place in San Francisco's Chinatown. In fact, the Chinese name for Waverly Place is Tin Hau Miuh Gai, the street of Tien Hau Temple. One of the oldest and biggest temples is the Kong Chow Temple (est. 1857) on Stockton Street on top of the post office. My father used to take me to the old Kong Chow Temple when it was on Pine Street when I was a kid, which today is still a vacant lot. As my father spoke to the dieties, I heard them talking back.
